To not remember who you are and not recognise those you love is often the cruel consequence of dementia. We must therefore always seek to ensure that a person’s identity is not lost and that we have the best possible therapies available to maintain their independence and a dignified lifestyle. Through our dementia care program we provide training, support and resources to staff and families to understand the uniqueness of the individual and the importance of holistic care.
To contribute actively to the development of enhanced models of dementia care we need assistance to:
- Provide education and training for staff to keep abreast of new research particularly in the area of models of care.
- Contribute to the enhancement of the living environment so that the person who lives in a personal world of ‘no memories’ will find comfort, safety, interest and joy in their surroundings.
- Develop networks with research institutions and further encourage the involvement of staff in projects by applying their time and skills.
